건국대학교 동물병원(원장 윤헌영)이 서울시보건환경연구원(원장 신용승)과 1월 19일 피학대 동물의 폐사 원인 규명을 위한 ‘수의 법의 검사 업무(영상진단 분야) 공동 협약’을 체결했다.

수의 법의 검사(Veterinary Forensic Medicine)는 동물 학대로 폐사가 의심되는 사건에서 동물 부검, 질병, 독극물 검사 등 사인을 규명하는 과정이다.

최근 반려동물 양육 가구가 증가하면서 동물 학대에 대한 사회적 관심이 증가하고 있다. 농림축산검역본부에 따르면 2019년부터 2022년까지 총 772건의 학대 의심 동물 폐사체에 대한 수의 법의 검사가 의뢰됐으며, 지난해 동물보호법이 개정되면서 피학대 동물에 대한 검사의 중요성도 강조되고 있다.

이번 협약 체결로 양 기관은 동물 부검 전 컴퓨터 단층 촬영(CT) 장비·시설·인력 공유 및 수의 법의학 공동 연구 등 동물 대상 범죄에 적극적으로 대응할 계획이다.

수사 기관이 학대 의심 사건을 의뢰하면 연구원이 △부검 △질병 검사 △독극물 검사 등을 진행하고, 건국대 동물병원은 부검 전 피학대 동물 사체에 대한 영상 검사 장비 및 인력 등을 제공해 전문적이고 과학적인 동물 학대 원인 규명에 협조한다.
